Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On March 5, 2010 the Scotts Valley Falcons played the Sacred Heart Prep Gators at Valley Christian High School in San Jose. The Central Coast Section (CCS) Division III Semifinal game featured the #1 seeded Falcons against the #4 seeded Gators. The weather was cloudy and the field conditions were good. The Gators entered the game with a season record of 14 wins, 4 losses and 3 ties. The Gators are the reining CCS Division III Champions from 2008-09. The Gators are a very good team, talented, well coached and disciplined.

The first half started with both teams aggressively trying to control the ball and initiate an attack. The Falcons came out fighting when they scored in the 9th minute when Aly Bothman shot the ball into the upper left corner of the Gators net after assists from Emily Payne and Jordin Carlson. The game went back and forth with most of the play being held in the middle of the field. The first half had the Falcons with 3 shots on goal while the Gators had 1 shot on goal. The half ended with the score being, Scotts Valley 1 to Sacred Heart Prep 0.

The second half had both teams coming out with intensity and purpose. The Falcons scored in the 46th minute when Jordin Carlson chipped in a shot from 20 yards out, over the Gators goalkeeper and into the net after assists from Madison Black and Kailey Payne. The Gators changed their formation to put more attacking pressure on the Falcons defense but the Falcons held and mounted their own attacks frequently. The second half had the Falcons with 3 shots on goal while the Gators had 3 shots on goal. The game ended with the score being, Scotts Valley 2 to Sacred Heart Prep 0.

The Falcon defense was once again at their best. The defense only allowed 4 shots on goal while several other shots were not on frame. Freshman goalkeeper Emily Johnson played another superb game while stopping the Gators on at least three excellent scoring opportunities including a penalty kick. Emily Johnson had 4 saves during the game and recorded her 17th shutout in 21 games this season.

The defensive backfield had an excellent game controlling the oppositions speed and talent. The defensive backs recorded several steals, settled the ball and mounted a counterattack all night. The defense was led by senior captain Brittany Kuo, senior Kelsey Baskovich, junior captain Aly Bothman, sophomore Kalynn Morano and freshman Kacey Lilly.

The Falcon midfielders played a phenomenal game controlling the ball on the ground and in the air. The midfielders were led by senior captain Kailey Payne, freshman Madison Black, junior Aly Bothman, senior Amy McDowell, senior Michelle Hunter, junior Keara McCullough, sophomore Jaemi Mansfield and sophomore Ranae Maloney.

The Falcons forwards played with persistence and energy all game. The forwards played with heart and speed while making their runs and putting relentless pressure on the Gators defense. The forwards were led by sophomore captain Jordin Carlson, sophomore Emily Payne, sophomore Taylor Rohde and sophomore Kathryn Balch.

The Falcons will now play in the CCS Division III Finals on March 6 against the Santa Cruz Cardinals at Valley Christian High School in San Jose. The Falcons have a season record of 15 wins, 2 losses and 4 ties.
