On Tuesday night, the Saint Francis Sharks Women's Varsity Basketball team traveled to Santa Cruz to take on the undefeated Santa Cruz Cardinals. The young Sharks were lacking staring forward, Junior Erin Laverone, out with a hand injury. Coach Winters put together a starting lineup that included Two freshmen, one sophomore and two juniors against a seasoned and mature Cardinals. The Sharks, using accurate shooting, opened up an 8-2 lead in the first minute, and led until 3:39 left in the first quarter when Santa Cruz went up 11-10. This lead was short lived and the Sharks came back and would not give up the lead until the middle of the third quarter and fought a seesaw battle until the 2:24 mark when the Cardinals maturity showed; however the Sharks kept the game close until the last few minutes of the game when Santa Cruz went up by 15 and finished the game with a 13 point victory. The Cardinals capitalized on 24 Shark turnovers and fourth quarter shooting that lapsed into a 6 for 15 shooting.

The Cardinal's Lindsay Walls led all scorers with 30 points. Also scoring was Stephanie Dickey and Alexis Tashima with 10 points and Ariana Neiblum who came off the bench to scored eight in the fourth quarter including two three point shots. For the Sharks, Freshman Rochelle Welsh had 16 points on 7 for 14 shooting, including two three point shots to go along with 7 rebounds and 1 blocked shot, Junior Nicole Smith had 16 points, Freshman Katherine Brown had 10 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore Annette Ruvalcaba had 6 points, 2 steals and 4 assists, Junior Jessie Ryan had 6 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals and Sophomore Jasmine Oliveres had one three point shot, 3 assists, 1 steal and 1 block.

The Sharks will next face San Lorenzo Valley at the Borina Athletic center on Thursday night.
