Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On January 25th, 2011 the Scotts Valley Falcons traveled to Soquel High to play the Knights on their field. The weather was perfect and the field conditions were excellent.

The Knights entered the game in first place in the SCCAL and undefeated on the season. The Knights had earned a well deserved undefeated season record of 9 wins, 0 losses and 1 tie. Their SCCAL record this season was 4 wins, 0 losses and 1 tie. The Knights are well coached, athletic, fast and very skilled.

The young Falcons went into the game with several injuries but an optimistic attitude and a strong will to compete against a very good opponent. The Falcon team is still learning and understanding how good they can be. The Falcons are a very balanced team with youth and experience.

The first half was played with a strong competition of putting pressure on the opponents defense. The first half had the Falcons with 4 shots on goal while the Knights were held to 2 shots on goal. The first half ended with the score being knotted at 0 to 0.

The second half had the Falcons immediately coming out and pressing the Knights defense. The Falcons scored in the 43rd minute when junior captain Emily Payne threw the ball in from the left sideline which bounced off a Knights defender and to freshman Lena Gustafsson. Lena settled the ball and fired a shot from approximately 25 yards that lofted over the Knights goalkeepers outstretched arms and into the back of the net for a score. The Falcons kept the pace up and challenged the Knights consistently all half. The second half ended with the Falcons firing 4 more shots on goal while the Knights had 1 shot on goal. The game ended with the score being, Falcons 1 to the Knights 0.

The Falcons once again had a stellar performance by a young and talented defensive backfield that is still improving. The defense was instrumental in taking away break-aways, strong fast tackles, settling the ball and building a counter attack. The defense was once again led by senior captain Aly Bothman, sophomore Rachel DuBridge, sophomore Kacey Lilly and freshman Megan Keating. It should be very clear that the leadership, experience, speed and composure of Aly Bothman is a driving force for the very young defense playing at an improving rate each game.

The Falcon goalkeeping was once again persistent and solid. Sophomore Emily Johnson was like a solid wall which gave the Knights shooters very little to look at. Emily saved 3 Knights shots on goal but frequently disrupted their attacks with a strong presence in goal. Emily registered her 6th shutout in 9.5 games this season.

The midfielders for the Falcons also had a fantastic game. The Falcons were fearless in their tackles and used their bodies to control the ball. The midfielders worked tirelessly to get back on defense, controlling the middle and led the offensive attacks. The Falcon midfielders were led by sophomore Madison Black, freshman Lena Gustafsson, Emily Payne, junior Jessica Romeo, junior Ranae Maloney, junior Jaemi Mansfield, junior Kathryn Balch and sophomore Olivia Gonzalez.

The Falcon forwards had an awesome game with constant runs on the defense and great touches on the ball. The forwards on several occasions worked their way through the Knights defense to put pressure on the goal. The Falcon forwards were led by junior captain Jordin Carlson, junior Taylor Rohde and senior captain Keara McCullough
