Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On February 17th, 2011 the Scotts Valley Falcons traveled to Soquel High to play the Soquel Knights. The weather was raining and cold while the field conditions were good.

The Knights entered the game in second place in the SCCAL with a record of 7 wins, 2 losses and 2 ties. The Knights had built a fantastic season record of 12 wins, 2 losses and 2 ties. The Knights are a well coached team that has great speed, size, skills and energy. The Knights have a strong defense and a high scoring offensive attack. Our last meeting on January 25th had the Falcons winning 1 to 0.

The first half started out with the Falcons coming out strong, fast and aggressive. The Falcons scored in the 12th minute when junior captain Jordin Carlson took a pass on the left wing and dribbled it past her defender and into the goalie box. The Knights goalkeeper reacted and tried to defend her goal. Jordin sent in a perfect pass to junior Ranae Maloney who fired the ball into the net from the center of the box. The Falcons were quick to recover and immediately continued to put relentless pressure on the Knights defense. At the 20th minute Ranae Maloney dribbled the ball down the right wing and passed it to junior Taylor Rohde in the middle of the field. Taylor Rohde settled the ball then fired a shot into the goal from approximately 20 yards out. The Falcons continued to play hard and give their all. The first half had the Falcons with 3 shots on goal while the Knights had 1 shot on goal. The half ended with the score being, Falcons 2 to Knights 0.

The second half was equally hard fought with the Knights trying to pressure the Falcons. The game went back and forth mainly in the middle of the field. Both defenses played extremely well and limited the other teams attacks. In the 63 minute of the game freshman Ianthe Tozer took a through ball down the left side and hustled down the sideline. Ianthe was beating her defender when she turned the ball into the goalie box and towards the goal. Ianthe was taken down and a foul was called. Senior captain Aly Bothman took the penalty kick and fired the ball into the right side of the net past the outstretched arms of the diving Knights goalkeeper. The Falcons and Knights continued to play hard all the way to the end of the game. The game was well officiated with just 5 fouls called on both teams. The second half had the Falcons with 3 more shots on goal while the Knights had 2 more shots on goal. The game ended with the score being, Falcons 3 to Knights 0.

The Falcons goalkeeping was again the work of sophomore Emily Johnson. Emily had another outstanding game saving 3 shots on goal and recording her 11th shutout of the season. Emily has played 1160 minutes (14 1/2 games) in goal, allowed 9 goals and saved 41 shots on goal. Emily continues to offer very little for the opposition to fire on her while she is in goal. Her positioning, decision making, aggressiveness and athletic presence in the goal box is key to our teams success. A combination of our defense and goalkeeping has kept our opposition in the SCCAL to 11 shutouts in 12 games. The Falcons have only allowed 2 goals in one game to Aptos in January.

The Falcon defense had another fine game with their aggressiveness and speed. The Falcon defense kept the mighty talented Knights offensive attack in check and only allowed 3 fairly easy to defend shots on our goal. The Falcon defense should be complimented on having another direct impact on why we defeated a very good Knights team. The Falcon defense was once again led by senior captain Aly Bothman, junior captain Kalynn Morano, sophomore Rachel DuBridge, sophomore Kacey Lilly and freshman Megan Keating. Having another marvelous game was Aly Bothman who continues to impress her coaching staff with her play and leadership. Also having a very good game was Kalynn, Rachel, Kacey and Megan. What more can be said other than the old saying, "Defense wins Championships!" Good job ladies for leaving your all out on the field.

The Falcon midfielders were equally as impressive and played their hearts out against an awesome Knights team. The midfielders challenged everything and set the tempo for the flow of the game. The midfielders played defense and offense while settling the ball, distributing the ball, building an attack and sparked the whole team. The midfielders were led by sophomore Madison Black, freshman Lena Gustafsson, junior Ranae Maloney, sophomore Olivia Gonzalez, junior Jessica Romeo, senior Ali Ayers and senior Pim Tamavimoke. Having a phenomenal game was Madison Black and Ranae Maloney who gave quality minutes the entire time they played.

The Falcon forwards were tenacious, aggressive and were relentless. The forwards had an excellent game putting pressure on one of the best defenses in the SCCAL. Prior to our game, the steady and reliable Knights defense had only allowed 6 opponents goals in 16 games this season. The Falcons speedsters were constantly making runs that made the daunted defense collapse and adjust to the attack giving us opportunities to score. The Falcon forwards were led by junior captain Jordin Carlson, junior Taylor Rohde, senior captain Keara McCullough, sophomore Jessica DuBridge and freshman Ianthe Tozer. Having another great game was Jordin Carlson and Taylor Rohde who also gave quality minutes when playing.

The Falcon ladies have now concluded their 2010-11 SCCAL as the champions once again. The Falcons finished with a record of 10 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie while defending their championship title from 2009-10. The teams improving maturity, chemistry and productivity over this season has created many magic moments. The Falcon ladies should be very proud with finishing out their season record with 13 wins, 4 losses and 2 ties. We started out against some tough competition while nursing injuries and illnesses all season. We went through one of the toughest schedules in the CCS while battling every game in our SCCAL. We worked through those adversities as well as coming together as a very young team. We've built some special memories and friendships that will be cherished forever.

We are now off to the CCS Playoffs once again to compete for the ultimate prize, the CCS Title. This Saturday will determine where we're seated in the brackets and who we will compete against. The Falcons are looking forward to our next competition, bring it on. Remember Falcon ladies, "We start as one, we finish as one!"
