Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
The Scotts Valley Falcons girls varsity soccer team continued their play at the Tri Valley Soccer Tournament. The Falcons were placed into the Gold division competing against very talented soccer teams. The second scheduled game of the day was going to be a huge test for our team. Our opponent was against the Bonita Vista Barons from Chula Vista (San Diego Area), California. The Barons have a student enrollment of 2500 and had a 2011 preseason record of 7 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie going into the tournament. The Barons are Nationally Ranked at #67 and State Ranked at #32. The Barons final record in 2010-11 was 12 wins, 6 losses and 7 ties. The Barons have an excellent girls varsity soccer program and are well respected in the nation for their soccer.

The first half had the Falcons coming out aggressive and playing with intensity. The Falcons put on relentless pressure with our speed, skill and game plan. In the 9th minute of the game we received a free kick from 35 yards away from the Barons goal. Senior captain Jordin Carlson fired a laser of a shot into the left corner of the Barons goal above the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper. The Falcons regrouped and continued to put good pressure on the talented Barons midfielders and defenders. We faced some adversity when two of our key starters went down with an injury and was unable to play the rest of the game. One injured senior captain player was out the rest of the tournament. The Falcons put together 7 shots on goal while the Barons only managed 2 shots on goal the first half. The half ended with the score being, Falcons 1 to the Barons 0.

The second half was very entertaining and competitive. Both defenses played very well and kept the other team from managing any good shots. Through out the half the game became more physical while the Barons desperately tried to mount an attack to even the score. In the 78th minute a Baron forward broke down the right side of the goalie box in an attempt to get off a shot when a Falcon defender was called for a foul in the box. A penalty shot was awarded to the Barons who converted their shot into a goal. The second half had the Falcons with 4 more shots on goal while the Barons had 2 shots on goal. The final score was, Falcons 1 to the Barons 1.

Falcons having a good game were goalkeeper junior captain Emily Johnson. Also playing very well was sweeper senior captain Jordin Carlson, stopper senior captain Kalynn Morano and forward junior Kacey Lilly. Having a good game at the midfield positions were junior captain Madison Black, senior Ranae Maloney, junior Rachel DuBridge and sophomore Lena Gustafsson. Forward senior Sonja Gustafsson also had a very good game.
