Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On January 31st, 2013 our Scotts Valley Falcons girls varsity soccer team traveled to Felton to play the San Lorenzo Valley Cougars in a home game. The lady Cougars entered the game with a season record of 5 wins, 7 losses and 1 tie while posting a record of 2 wins and 6 losses in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL). The Cougars had scored 16 goals this season while allowing 38 goals. Our Falcons had scored 22 goals while allowing 18 goals. Our lady Falcons entered the game with high hopes and expectations.

In the first half we wanted to come out fast and aggressive. We struck quick when sophomore Taylor Raymond took a throw-in deep in Cougar territory. The throw-in was perfect to the middle of the field where senior captain Madison Black flicked the ball backwards by a header to the feet of junior Melinda Lane. Melinda then calmly delivered a strong shot into the back of the Cougar net from point blank range. Our Falcons regrouped and continued the pressure. In the 14th minute Taylor Raymond delivered a sweet pass to Madison Black who passed it to freshman Audrey Liebenberg. Audrey quickly trapped and shot the ball into the net for a second goal. The game continued to be played with our Falcons doing a great job on offense and defense. In the 39th and 40th minutes freshman Allie Carl presented good passes to Audrey Liebenberg who put them both in the Cougar net for the third and fourth goal of the half. The first half had the Falcons with 10 shots on goal while the Cougars put 2 shots on goal. The half ended with the score being Falcons 4 to the Cougars 0.

At half we wanted the lady Falcons to keep their composure, play hard and work at building our attacks. In the 46th minute we received a free-kick from approximately 20 yards away. Madison Black sent a wicked shot to the lower right side of the goal and into the net for a fifth goal. The game settled down and both teams worked hard. In the 78th minute we received a corner-kick which was taken by freshman Emmy Koflanovich. Emmy delivered a line drive pass to the front of the Cougar net where Melinda Lane went high in the air and redirected the flight of the ball past the diving Cougar goalkeeper and into the net. The second half came to a conclusion with our Falcons having 6 more shots on goal while the Cougars had 4 more shots on goal. The game ended with the score being Falcons 6 to the Cougars 0.

Our goalkeepers were senior captain Emily Johnson (40 min) who had 2 saves and junior Claire Covert (40 min) who had 4 saves. Both our goalkeepers had a good game and were instrumental in the shutout. Our defense was solid the entire game and was led by junior Darby McFall, freshman Mary Lonhart, freshman Desiree Rakela and freshman Marissa Sion. Our outside midfielders were sophomore Taylor Raymond, freshman Allie Carl, freshman Mikaela Inman and junior Nicole LaPorte. Our inside midfielders had a dominating game and were led by senior captain Madison Black, freshman Emmy Koflanovich and junior Melinda Lane. Our forwards had high energy and effort the entire game and were led by freshman Audrey Liebenberg and senior captain Jessica DuBridge. Special recognition for having a good game goes to Madison Black and Emmy Koflanovich. Our "Players of the Game" go to Audrey Liebenberg, Taylor Raymond and Melinda Lane who all had an exceptional game and had a great impact on how our team played.

A special thanks to the lady Cougars for their hospitality and for a good game. Our performance this game was inspiring and showed that we are improving with our confidence. Our record now stands in the SCCAL as 4 wins, 1 loss and 3 ties while our season record has moved to 6 wins, 5 losses and 5 ties. Our next game will be on Tuesday, February 5th, 3:30 PM at Depot Field (Santa Cruz) against the first place Santa Cruz Cardinals.
