Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On February 14, 2013 our Scotts Valley Falcons girls varsity soccer team had a rare home game against the St Francis Sharks. The Sharks record for the season was 4 wins, 12 losses and 1 tie while posting 1 win and 10 losses in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL).

At the beginning of the game we spoke with our Falcons players about coming out aggressive and with energy. We started the game by dominating possession of the ball on our half of the field. In the 12th minute sophomore Taylor Raymond took one of many throw-ins deep in the Sharks territory. The ball made it to the front of the Sharks goal where freshman Allie Carl drilled the ball into the net. We immediately went back to work playing our game and controlling the tempo of the game. In the 25th minute we were on an attack when Allie Carl delivered a pass from the right to the left side of the field. Freshman Mikaela Inman took the shot over the Sharks goalkeeper and into the back right corner of the goal. The first half had our Falcons with 11 shots on goal while the Sharks managed 1 shot. At halftime the score was Falcons 2 to the Sharks 0.

At halftime we expressed the need to pick up the momentum and assault the Sharks goal with shots on frame. The second half we came out with intensity and once again peppered the Sharks goal with shots. The Sharks defense and goalkeeper bent a little but did not give in. In the 55th minute Taylor Raymond again took a throw-in from the left sideline. Taylor delivered a great pass that went to the far right post where junior Nicole LaPorte headed the ball over a diving Sharks goalkeeper and into the back of the goal. The Sharks defense continued to play hard and kept them in the game . The second half had our Falcons with 7 more shots on goal while the Sharks did not manage a shot. The final score was our Falcons 3 to the Sharks 0.

Our defense was pretty good and completely shut down attack after attack by the Sharks. Our goalkeepers were senior captain Emily Johnson (50 min) and junior Claire Covert (30 min). Our defensive backfield was junior Melinda Lane, freshman Mary Lonhart, freshman Marissa Sion and freshman Desiree Rakela. Our outside midfielders were sophomore Taylor Raymond, junior Nicole LaPorte, freshman Mikaela Inman and freshman Maddie Hitzeman. Our inside midfielders were senior captain Madison Black, freshman Emmy Koflanovich, freshman Allie Carl and sophomore Emily Todd. Our forwards were played by freshman Audrey Liebenberg and senior captain Jessica DuBridge. Our entire team played well and special kudos go to Taylor Raymond, Melinda Lane, Desiree Rakela and Madison Black for having a solid performance. Our "Player of the Game" was Allie Carl who brought her "A" game the entire time.

I want to thank the lady Sharks for a good game. I want to congratulate our entire Falcons team for putting their heart and soul into the game. Over time we've evolved into a team that will compete with who ever we play. I want to thank our injured players, senior captain Kacey Lilly, freshman Anna Payne, junior Darby McFall and junior Megan Keating for supporting and cheering on their teammates and the spirit they showed the entire game. I want to welcome Maddie Hitzeman and Emily Todd to the varsity squad and applaud them for adapting quickly to our level of soccer. Our team competed with honor and competitiveness. We have completed our overall 2012/13 season with a record of 9 wins, 6 losses and 5 ties. Our SCCAL record ended with 7 wins, 2 losses and 3 ties. On Saturday Feb 16th we will find out from the CCS whether we made the playoffs. Our Falcons have had a very good season, worked hard, developed as players, built character and were consistently competing. We've surely surprised many teams and played above our expectations while clearly holding to the high standard of soccer play that has been a long tradition of the SVHS.
