Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On February 20, 2013 our Scotts Valley Falcons girls varsity soccer team hosted the Kings Academy Knights from Sunnyvale at our field. It was the first round in the Central Coast Section Division III Playoffs. We were seeded #4 and the Knights were #13. The Knights entered the game with a season record of 7 wins, 6 losses and 5 ties. Our Falcons have been devastated by losing players all season to a wide range of reasons. Sitting on the bench due to injuries were starters senior captain Madison Black, junior Darby McFall, freshman Anna Payne and senior captain Kacey Lilly. Our starting lineup in this game will consist of 7 freshman, 1 sophomore, 2 juniors and 1 senior. Our lady Falcons were ready and prepared for a tough game.

The first half was played pretty much in the middle of the field with both teams not getting very many opportunities at assaulting the others goal. Our young Falcons played with pride and heart. They gave it their all and competed with effort and young talent. The first half had the Knights with 3 shots on goal while our Falcons had 1 shot on goal. The score at the half was Falcons 0 to the Knights 0.

At halftime we insisted the team pick up their effort, energy and urgency to score. We played well in the second half but the Knights were up to the challenge. We quickly put four shots on the Knights frame but their goalie stopped the attempts. The Knights were on the attack in the 72nd minute when they had the ball deep into our zone. The Knights then scored a goal from close range which energized them. In the later part of the second half the Knights peppered our goal with another 7 shots on our goal. Our senior captain goalkeeper, Emily Johnson had to make at least three spectacular saves to prevent the Knights from scoring. Our Falcons picked up their effort and urgency in the last five minutes but we were unable to put in a score. The game ended with the score being Knights 1 to our Falcons 0.

Our Falcon goalkeeping was played by Emily Johnson. Once again Emily played fantastic and carried her teammates the entire game. Our defense had a solid showing and were led by freshman Desiree Rakela, freshman Mary Lonhart, junior Megan Keating and freshman Marissa Sion. Our outside midfielders were led by sophomore Taylor Raymond, junior Nicole LaPorte, freshman Mikaela Inman and freshman Maddie Hitzeman. Our inside midfielders were played by freshman Allie Carl, freshman Emmy Koflanovich, junior Melinda Lane and sophomore Emily Todd. Our forwards were freshman Audrey Liebenberg and senior captain Jessica DuBridge. Having a good game was defender Desiree Rakela, inside midfielder Allie Carl and outside midfielder Taylor Raymond. Our Player of the Game goes to our goalkeeper, Emily Johnson.

I want to thank the Knights for a hard fought game. Our final season record now stands at 9 wins, 7 losses and 5 ties. Kudos to junior Claire Covert, freshman Megan Lonhart and our injured players for cheering and supporting their teammates the entire game. Our Falcon coaching staff are very proud of all our players this season. Our team collectively exceeded our goals and expectations. We played tough soccer, competed and challenged everyone on our schedule. Our upperclassmen played like true seasoned veterans, leaders and with a competitiveness that brought our play to a higher level. We appreciate our underclassmen who gave their all and competed with other players four years older than some of them. We came together as a team and finished with a special chemistry. We fought through adversity which strengthened our character. I would like to also thank our parents and fans for your support.
