Mission Trail Athletic League 2001 Football Preview

The 2000 campaign will go down as one of the best title races in league history. In a strange quirk of fate, three teams made it through week seven undefeated - Pacific Grove, Seaside and Stevenson. As a result, the final three weeks of the regular season featured title-implicated games between the trio of teams. In week eight, Seaside humbled Pacific Grove 31-0, leaving two undefeated teams. Week nine saw Stevenson whip Pacific Grove 21-6, setting up an MTAL week 10 championship game between 9-0 Stevenson and 9-0 Seaside. In an intense battle, Stanford-bound Chris Bonifas ran for 137 yards as Stevenson edged Seaside 17-7 for its first-ever MTAL football championship.

Playoffs
The postseason has not been kind to the MTAL since losing perennial power Palma to the Monterey Bay League three years ago. The MTAL is just 1-7 in the playoffs since Palma's departure, with the lone win coming last year with Stevenson's 35-7  win over Capuchino in the first round despite placing 3 teams in the postseason. The small school MTAL has had the misfortune of being in the same CCS Division Four playoff classification as some of the top teams in the state. San Lorenzo Valley is the two-time defending CCS D4 champion, with back to back state #1 rankings in their division. Palma won the CCS D1 (large school) title last season after collecting 7 small school CCS titles. Throw in Riordan and Valley Christian, who both play in large school "A" leagues, and you have a very competitive playoff division. There is good news this year for MTAL postseason participants: CCS rules allow only 2 titles in a row at a lower division, so San Lorenzo Valley will be forced up at least one playoff division. Additionally, Palma and Valley Christian now compete exclusively at the D1 level.

Graduation Hits League Hard
Of the twenty-seven MTAL players who garnered postseason honors last year, only four were underclassmen. Three of these returning players will strap it on for Pacific Grove. All-County linebacker Trevor Howell and All-MTAL defensive back Phil Shin will headline the Breaker defense. Both players bring impressive numbers to the offensive side of the ball as well. Howell rushed for 438 yards and 12 TD's last season. Shin, an All-MTAL and All-County receiver, gathered in 37 receptions for 515 yards and 5 TD's as one of the area's top deep threats. All-MTAL and All-County kicker Brooke Emanuel (3 field goals, 27 extra points) will stretch the field for the Breakers with his strong leg. One of the most versatile players in the area returns to play for Soledad. All-County utility player Erick Salto rushed for 271 yards and 4 TD's, hauled in 15 passes for 220 yards and 2 TD's, and ran back 2 kickoffs for touchdowns.

Pacific Grove's Jon Grant (1384 yards, 9 TD's, 10 INT's) and Soledad's Robert Magana (1267 yards, 9 TD's, 13 INT's) headline this year's quarterback class. Both begin their third season as starting quarterbacks in the league.

The league returns a solid corps of experienced ball carriers. Look for Seaside running back Donnie Brooks (412 yards, 4 TD's), and Carmel's Toby McLeod (532 yards, 4 TD's), King City's Delphin Antonio (489 yards, 4TD's), and Greenfield's Daniel Vargas (418 yards, 7 TD's) to put up some impressive numbers. Tight Ends Tim Covington (6-3, 280lbs, 318 yards, 2 TD's) of Carmel and Isaac Valaderez (6-3, 225lbs, 187 yards, 2 TD's) of King City will make big plays down the middle of the field.

Early Favorites
Pacific Grove returns key skill position players and seasoned leadership, and Soledad returns practically its entire squad from last year. But no program in the MTAL has been as consistent from the freshman level to varsity as Seaside, a dark horse pick for the title. The Seaside freshman and JV programs have both posted back to back titles, and that success may allow the Spartans to reload and sneak up on the frontrunners. With their recent success, the Spartans have limited the number of players who, in the past, have ended up wearing the green and gold of the zip code next door.

Stevenson

Last Season: 11-1 (7-0)

MTAL Champs

Second Round CCS D4 Playoffs

Key Returnees

Casey Grover Tight End

It was a year of firsts for the Stevenson Pirates last season - their first 10 win season, their first undefeated league season, and their first MTAL football title. Chris Bonifas became Stevenson's first 1600 yard rusher, and also set a school record with 23 rushing touchdowns. Bonifas' play at linebacker earned him a football scholarship to Stanford. There must be something in the Stevenson water - alumni Sekou Sanyika now plays linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals.

There have been a few changes on the Pebble Beach campus since last fall. Stevenson lost virtually its entire starting lineup to graduation, including 6 players who received All-MTAL and/or All-County honors. Long-time head coach Jeff Young retired, with 24 year-old first-time head coach Scott Hare taking over the helm. Stevenson will scrap a run heavy offense that produced an area-high 3240 rushing yards and replace it with an air-oriented offensive scheme. Quarterback Chris Jackson took his first varsity snaps in the preseason and performed very well , throwing for 360 yards and a touchdown. Look for receiver David Leach and tight end Casey Grover to put up big reception numbers. Jamie Staples and Deke Dormer will run the ball for the Pirates.

Seaside

Last Season: 9-2  (6-1)

First Round CCS D4 Playoffs

Key Returnees

Donnie Brooks Running Back

After rolling to a 9-0 record to start last season, the Seaside express came to an abrupt halt with a 17-7 loss to Stevenson in the league championship game, and a 35-14 first round playoff loss to eventual CCS champion San Lorenzo Valley. After losing 8 seniors who received All-MTAL and/or All-County honors, the Spartans may have some rebuilding ahead of them. Making that process easier is the return of running back Donnie Brooks (5-8, 170lbs, 412 yards, 4 TD's). John Scott has raised some eyebrows running the ball in the preseason. Massive bookend linemen Junior Penueta (6-2, 315) and David Gwara (6-4, 290) will anchor a solid defensive line. Adam Gardner (6-3, 180) looks to take over at quarterback for the talented Anthony Garnett.

Pacific Grove

Last Season: 8-3  (5-2)

First Round CCS D4 Playoffs

Key Returnees

Jon Grant Quarterback
Trevor Howell Linebacker
Phil Shin Receiver/DB
Brooke Emanuel Kicker
Before the season began, it appeared that the pieces were in place for Pacific Grove's first MTAL title since 1988. Key preseason injuries now loom large as the Breakers enter into league play. In the preseason opener against Salinas, All-County linebacker/fullback Trevor Howell (6-2, 230lbs, 438 yards,12 TD's) broke a bone in his wrist, and starting running back Eric Consiglio suffered a leg injury. Their return status is still unknown. Stellar quarterback Jon Grant (1384 passing yards, 9 TD's) will have to shoulder the offensive load until the ground game returns. That job will be made easier with the return of All-MTAL and All-County receiver Phil Shin (37 receptions, 515 yards, 5 TD's). With Shin drawing double teams, look for secondary receiver Andrew Engles to pile up the yardage. All-MTAL/All-County kicker Brooke Emanuel may be the best in the area.

Soledad

Last Season: 7-3  (4-3)

Key Returnees

Erick Salto Running Back
Robert Magana Quarterback
Fred Castro Defensive End
Soledad may return the most overall talent and depth in the league. That talent begins with the multi-talented Erick Salto, who rushed for 271 yards and 4 TD's, hauled in 15 passes for 220 yards and 2 TD's, and ran back 2 kickoffs for touchdowns last season. Senior quarterback Robert Magana (1267 yards, 9 TD's, 13 INT's) has plenty of arm to beat anyone in the air. Championships are won on the line, and the Aztecs may return the best on both sides of the ball. Eugene Campos (6-2, 290) will anchor an offensive line that includes Daniel Sibaja (6-0, 250), Ivan Trujillo (5-10, 235), Jerry DeAnza (5-10, 235) and Sal Aguilar (6-2, 225).  Linebacker/Defensive End Fred Castro (6-3, 225) heads a standout defensive unit.

King City

Last Season: 4-6  (3-4)

Key Returnees

Isaac Valaderez Tight End
J.D. Lisk Linebacker
Delphin Antonio Running Back
Junior quarterback Cole Hudson (5-9) will take his first varsity snaps for the Mustangs, and protecting him will be one of the largest lines in the league. Center KoKo Edington (6-3, 260), John Layous (6-1, 190) and twin brothers Ryan and Robert Emberson will anchor an offensive line that looks to be the strong point of the team. Tight end Isaac Valaderez (6-3, 225), one of the league's best receivers, will also add to the beef on the front line. Delphin Antonio (489 yards, 4TD's) returns to spark the Mustang ground game. Linebacker J.D. Lisk (6-2, 210) will plug the run on defense.

Gonzales

Last Season: 3-7  (2-5)

Key Returnees

Robert Cazares Running Back
Gonzales, just two seasons removed from their 1999 MTAL title season, has recently struggled with enrollment numbers with the opening of nearby Soledad High. It may be quarterback by committee until either Danny Gonzales or Ismael Gudino steps up and takes control of the job. Robert Cazares (67 yards, 2 TD's), and brothers John and Peter Maturino will handle most of the Spartan ground game. Linemen Richard Rodriguez (6-0, 250), Luke Hoagland (6-0, 245), Hector Rodriguez (5-11, 280), Ryan Evans (6-0, 290) and Jaime Carillo (5-10, 245) will likely be asked to play both sides of the ball.

Greenfield

Last Season: 3-7  (1-6)

Key Returnees

Daniel Vargas Running Back
Look for Greenfield linemen Diego and Miguel Zavala (6-0, 220) to open holes for returning running back Daniel Vargas (418 yards, 7 TD's). Jake Fudge, a utility receiver and running back last season, will handle the quarterback duties for the Bruins. Junior running back Chris Clayton will also contribute in the backfield.

Carmel

Last Season: 0-9  (0-7)

Key Returnees

Toby McLeod Running Back
Tim Covington Tight End
The surprising Padres, with 14 straight previous losses, have jumped out to a 2-0 preseason mark. Sophomore quarterback Pat Johnson (5-9) will run an offense that annually leads the area in passing attempts and yards. Tight end Tim Covington (6-3, 280) will provide Johnson with a large target. Look for receivers Dusty Hare to be among the league reception leaders. Three year starter  Toby McLeod (532 yards, 4 TD's) will again carry load for the Padre ground game. On defense, Covington will also play defensive end where he was an All-MTAL second team selection last year. Andrew Tope (5-10, 190) and Dylan Roddick (6-4, 260) will try and solidify a defensive unit that gave up 3709 total yards, worst in the area.
