Turnovers Plague Weekend Games

WEEK SEVEN NOTES
10/23/2001

Monterey Bay Prep Report

Week 7 Notes and Key Stats

  • Alvarez's dramatic come-from-behind win at Gilroy sets up not only a  probable MBL title game, but one of the biggest games of the year in the entire section. CCS #2 ranked Palma against CCS #5 ranked Alvarez will feature a rare league match up between two  top 5 CCS teams. Alvarez has installed additional bleacher seating to accommodate the larger-capacity visiting crowd.
  • Pacific Grove's 31-21 victory over Seaside, combined with Stevenson's 10-9 upset of undefeated Carmel, has the Breakers holding the inside track to their first MTAL title since 1988. In that co-championship year with Palma, Pacific Grove lost a tough first round CCS playoff game to Watsonville, 18-13. Palma lost in the first round as well to eventual CCS champion North Monterey County, 14-0. That 1988 playoff loss was the last time a team from Monterey County defeated the Chieftains.

  • According to our records, Alisal's 20-13 victory was the first football win over Live Oak in school history. It is also believed that Alisal's earlier victory over Monterey was a first as well.
  • Carmel's loss to Stevenson may have put a damper on Padre  MTAL title aspirations, but a playoff appearance is still attainable with a second place league finish. That would be quite an accomplishment for a Carmel program that entered the season with a 14 game losing streak. Additionally, only one Carmel squad has ever made it to the postseason in the 29-year history of the CCS. The 1983 MTAL champs lost their lone CCS playoff game to Harbor High, 13-7.

Week 7 By The Numbers

192 Number of rushing yards racked up by Greenfield's Chris Clayton against King City. The Bruin running back came into week seven's game with just 213 yards on the year.

14 Number of interceptions by the Palma secondary, tops in the area. The Chieftains have picked off 8 passes in the last 2 games.
8 Number of consecutive quarters Monterey High has gone without scoring.
