Week 1 By The Numbers

354  Gilroy running back Justin Sweeney has been on fire carrying the ball for the undefeated Mustangs, rushing for 354 yards and 5 touchdowns on just 36 carries.
160  With a 160 yard effort on the ground vs. Coast Union, Greenfield running back Fachon Clair is just 100 yards short of his 2003 season total.
120  Salinas racked up 120 penalty yards in an ugly 19-13 victory over Watsonville. The two teams combined for 8 turnovers and 170 penalty yards. On the bright side, the staunch Cowboy defense limited Watsonville to 15 yards rushing on 31 carries (.48 yards per carry). Last season Watsonville led all area teams with 3689 yards on the ground.
94 It has been a rough start for local teams vs. the always-tough West Catholic Athletic league. Area teams are 0-3 vs. the elite league and have been outscored 94-7 in three lopsided losses. More marquee games are on deck: St. Ignatius vs. S.L.V. (9/18); Bellarmine vs. Hollister  (9/24); Salinas vs. St. Francis (9/24); Palma vs. Serra (9/25); and Salinas vs. Valley Christian (10/1).
47 What a difference a year makes. The 2003 Vikings, featuring Duke-bound Ronnie Drummer, averaged 235 yards rushing per game. In the season opener vs. Soquel, North Salinas was held to 47 yards on 23 attempts.
89 Last season the Scott's Valley's defense limited Stevenson to 54 total yards of offense in a 22-7 victory, holding the Pirates to just 20 yards rushing on 29 attempts (.68 yards per carry). The Falcons almost matched the feat again, limiting Stevenson the just 89 total yards of offense.
13 13 different players carried the ball for Palma in a 53-7 victory over Alisal. 10 players rushed for double-digit yardage, and 5 different players scored touchdowns. No player rushed for 100 yards.
10 With Live Oak's victory, the area's longest losing streak now stands at 10 for Monte Vista Christian.
7 Alvarez turned the ball over 7 times in a 28-0 loss to Live Oak.
1 Live Oak snapped a 24 game winless streak with an impressive 28-0 victory over visiting Alvarez. The Acorn defense limited Alvarez to just 130 yards of total offense, forcing 7 turnovers. Live Oak is now riding a 1 game winning streak for the first time since October 13, 2001, when the Acorns shut out Monterey 14-0.
