Week 7  By The Numbers

487 Gilroy amassed 487 yards of total offense vs. Palma, averaging 8.11 yards per play in a 29-22 victory. The Mustangs never punted. Justin Sweeney accounted for
47 The San Benito defense limited North Salinas to 6 first downs and 47 yards of total offense in a 41-0 shutout victory. The Vikings averaged 1.42 yards per play.
9 Quad-league defenses have posted 9 shutouts this season:
  • Carmel (vs. Soledad)
  • Gilroy (vs. Gunn)
  • Live Oak (vs. Alvarez)
  • Monterey (vs. Alvarez)
  • North Monterey County (vs. Gonzales)
  • North Salinas (vs. Gonzales)
  • Seaside (vs. Washington-Fremont)
  • San Benito (vs. North Salinas)
  • Pacific Grove (vs. Soledad)
8 8 different receivers hauled in 80 or more yards worth of receptions in week 7.
4 The Seaside defense limited Alvarez to 4 first downs in a 49-12 homecoming victory. The Eagles managed only 53 yards rushing against the stingy Spartan defense.
1 Gilroy's victory was the first-ever over Palma at any level of play. Gilroy's combined record vs. Palma (freshman, J.V. and Varsity) coming into week 7 stood at 0-18; it now stands at 1-20. Gilroy joins Salinas and San Benito as the only quad-league area team to defeat Palma in the last 15 years.
1 There is only 1 undefeated team remaining in the quad-league area: Live Oak sits at 7-0, with 3 stiff tests upcoming vs. Palma, San Benito and Gilroy.

Note: We still need game stats from :

 Seaside vs. Washington (Fremont)
 Carmel vs. Branham
Monterey vs. King City

Any help getting us the score by quarter, scoring breakdown and individual game stats would be greatly appreciated.

Quotes of the Week

Louie Walter Santa Cruz Sentinel
"I cant describe what Im feeling right now," said Scotts Valley coach Louie Walters with tears in his eyes. "Anytime you can get a win is great, but to do it against a perennial power like SLV, its just unbelievable."
Chris Cameron Hollister Freelance
We just came out and tried to execute, said coach Chris Cameron. We knew that we could get to them after they were sacked eight times last week. Our goal was to shut them out.
Darren Yafai Gilroy Dispatch
Definitely one of the biggest wins in Gilroy football history, head coach Darren Yafai said to his team afterward. People will be talking about this one for a long time.

We just beat Palma, said Yafai, still squarely placed on Cloud 9 even 30 minutes after the final play. In my 15 years of coaching, this is far and away the best Ive ever felt after a game.

Al Avila Monterey County Herald
"Our game is real physical," Seaside coach Al Avila said. "We want to bring it from the get go."

"No one has consistently driven the ball on us this season," Avila said. "The only way we get hurt is by giving up big plays."

Buck Roggeman Monterey County Herald
"Our team always was and always will be built on defense," coach Buck Roggeman said.
Pete Noble Monterey County Herald
"The wins are nice but overall we still need to get better," Monterey head coach Pete Noble said. "The kids have to continue to practice and play hard."
