Notes

The reigning CCS Division 1 champions face their biggest challenge of the season, playing Archbishop Mitty Friday night for the CCS D1 title. The Monarchs are currently ranked #10 overall in the state by Cal-Hi sports, #5 in Northern California, and #1 in the CCS by the San Jose Mercury. Palma made it to the finals with a 33-0 win over Bellarmine. Mitty got by perennial power Oak Grove 35-27 to earn their first-ever D1 championship game appearance. Mitty combines an explosive Wing-T offense with a stifling defense. The Mitty defense has held their opponents to 14 or fewer points in 11 of their 12 games. Mitty features a very talented offensive backfield, headlined by highly touted junior Robert Perry. In Mitty's win last week over Oak Grove, the multi-talented Perry rushed 13 times for 140 yards and a touchdown, hauled in 2 touchdown passes from quarterback Aaron Bates, and returned a kick 51 yards to set up another Mitty score. Mitty also features running back Jason Oliver, another explosive back that keeps defenses from keying on Perry. Oliver had a 75 yard touchdown run on the second play of the game last week against Oak Grove, and rushed for 130 yards and 5 touchdowns in a big win over Riordan earlier in the season. Rocco Caringello is the Monarch's other threat in the backfield. Perry and receiver Danny Dressman compose one of the most dangerous kick return tandems in the section.

Saturday's Games

Pioneer (7-5) At Pacific Grove (11-1)

Game Time:  3:00

Location:

San Jose City College

Last Year

Teams did not play.

Notes

Pacific Grove and Pioneer square off Saturday to determine the CCS D4 champion. Neither school has played in a CCS football championship game. Don't underestimate Pioneer's abilities based upon their record - the small San Jose school plays in one of the toughest leagues in the section - the Blossom Valley Athletic League's Mount Hamilton Division. Three of Pioneer's respectably close losses came at the hands of Division1 playoff teams Oak Grove, Valley Christian and Bellarmine. Pioneer's other two losses were to MHAL co-champ Piedmont Hills (D2 playoff team), and to Santa Teresa Athletic League champ Gunderson (D4 playoff team). The Pioneer offense is sparked by running back Jacob French, the Mustang's all-purpose yardage leader and a threat both running and receiving the ball. Pioneer topped Saratoga 24-10 in last week's semifinals. Pacific Grove rolled over Capuchino 49-21.

  Salinas (9-2-1) At Hollister (10-2)

Game Time: 7:00

Location:

Gilroy High

Earlier This Season

Despite out-gaining their opponent 361-197 in total yardage, three turnovers and several costly penalties hurt Salinas in a 20-14 week 7 loss to Hollister. Trailing 20-7 in the 4th quarter, Salinas mounted a furious comeback with two late drives. The first drive resulted in a Nick Souza touchdown reception with 4:37 remaining in the game. Salinas held Hollister on downs, and with less than a minute remaining received the ball at the Baler 46 yard line via a punt. Salinas drove to the Hollister 15 yard line with 1:00 remaining, but Hollister was able to hold on downs and claim a hard-fought victory.

Notes

The reigning CCS Division 2 champion Hollister Haybalers face the daunting task of beating league opponent Salinas for a second time in the same season. This D2 title game features four of the top 10 backs in the area. Salinas' Rachard Williams (1112 yards/11 rushing TD's) and Andy Palacio (960 yards/12 rushing TD's) have been on fire in the postseason, combining for 6 playoff rushing touchdowns. Hollister's Trenton Young (1129 yards/12 rushing TD's) and Steve Salcedo (739 yards/10 rushing TD's) have also combined for 6 postseason rushing touchdowns. The Hollister offense has not been as explosive this season compared to last year, but the Balers have made up for that by playing virtually mistake free football on offense. Hollister has turned the ball over just 8 times this the season via 5 fumbles and 3 interceptions. Hollister has a +14 (22 takeaways, 8 giveaways) turnover margin on the year, where Salinas is just +2 (22 takeaways, 20 giveaways). The Hollister defense has scored 5 defensive touchdowns, tops in the area. Salinas edged Aragon 21-17 to advance to the D2 final - Hollister advanced by beating Alvarez 34-13.
